How Does Spinal Movement Affect a Child's Brain?

Most people picture the same thing when they think about what a chiropractor does. A bone slips out, it pinches a nerve, like a foot on a garden hose. It's a tidy image. For a developing brain, I think it's also the wrong one, and the real story is more interesting.

Your child's brain builds its entire picture of the body out of a constant stream of signals traveling up the spine. That stream tells the brain where the body is, how it's moving, what's happening to it. When a segment of the spine isn't moving well, it distorts the stream. And now the brain is trying to build itself on top of distorted information.

We have a simple rule for this: altered input alters output. If the information going up to the brain is noisy, the development, the coordination, and the behavior coming back out are affected by that noise.

Nothing is cut and nothing is pinched. The signal is just fuzzy. What we see is that a brain running on a fuzzy signal tends to stay a little on guard, and tends to climb the developmental ladder less smoothly than it otherwise would.

This matters far more in a child than in an adult, and that difference is the whole reason we're careful about it. An adult brain is using the signal. A child's brain is building itself around the signal. Feed a growing system a distorted picture of the body for long enough, and the system organizes around the distortion.

So this is what we actually measure and clear. Not a dramatic bone out of place. The interference that's making the signal noisy in the first place. When normal movement is restored, the signal gets accurate again, and the brain gets a clean read of the body.

The input clears up. The output, the development that had been building on top of that noisy signal, gets a real chance to catch up.

That's what we mean when we say "clearing interference." We're cleaning up the connection between the body and the brain, so the brain can trust the information it's getting and build on ground that isn't moving.

And it's measurable, which honestly matters to me more than any explanation does. You don't have to take the mechanism on faith. You can look at the scan.
