What Are the Right Goals for a Struggling Child?

Dr. Vincent Farrar, DC, DICCP, CACCPJuly 21, 20262 min read

The right goals follow a child's own path, not a grade-level box. Early foundations are what later school and social skills get built on.

What Are the Right Goals for a Struggling Child?

Here's a mistake that's easy to make and quietly devastating: setting the wrong goals.

When a child is struggling, the instinct, and the pressure from every system around you, is to aim at the chronological-age box. Read at grade level by spring. Make friends this semester. Sit still like the other kids.

Those goals feel responsible. They're also the deficit model wearing a nicer outfit, and they set your whole family up to feel like failures, because they measure your child against a box instead of against their own path.

We do it differently, in two parts.

First, you always leave with two things, not one.

There's the long-term why: clearing the interference and rebuilding the foundation, the root work that takes time. And there are right-now strategies, practical things you can use this week while the long arc unfolds. Ways to add prediction, control, and connection so the hard moments get a little easier now. You shouldn't have to white-knuckle three months waiting on the deep work. Wins now, change over time. Both buckets, always.

Second, we set goals that are actually the right goals.

Not the grade-level box. Real markers of a changing brain. Coming down from a meltdown in ten minutes instead of an hour. Connecting outside of themselves. Better control of their own body. Sleeping through a noise that used to end the night.

Those aren't consolation prizes. In development, they're the foundation the academic stuff gets built on, and they tend to be the earliest honest sign that the trajectory is moving.

We have a phrase for them: windows into a changing brain. When your child comes down from a hard moment faster, or asks about someone else's feelings for the first time, or stops needing the hood up in a loud room, that isn't a small thing to me. That's the foundation shifting, and what we see is that it tends to come before the bigger changes rather than after them.

So we're going to celebrate those out loud. And we're going to stop measuring your child against a box they were never developmentally ready for in the first place.

Aim at the real target. In my experience, the box tends to take care of itself.
