What Is Really Happening During a Child's Meltdown?

Dr. Vincent Farrar, DC, DICCP, CACCPJuly 21, 20262 min read

A meltdown often isn't defiance. It's a sign the demand outran the tools a child has so far, like being told to run ten miles before running one.

What Is Really Happening During a Child's Meltdown?

Let me tell you what I think is actually happening in the moment you dread. The meltdown in aisle six. The explosion over homework. The total shutdown when it's time to leave.

Picture this. I tell you to run ten miles. You can't yet run one. And I'm your coach, so I keep yelling: run harder, why aren't you running, everyone else is running. What do you do? Eventually you hide behind a tree so I can't find you. And when I find you and turn the pressure up, you avoid, and avoid, and avoid, and then you explode.

That's a meltdown. The demand was bigger than the tool, and the pressure to perform anyway had nowhere to go.

When the demand on a child, sit still, focus, read, handle a loud room, move on to the next thing, outruns the tools their nervous system has actually developed, the brain deflects. Those deflections are the behaviors you've been living with: the hyperactivity, the sensory overwhelm, the anxiety, the control-seeking, the meltdown itself. They aren't defiance and they aren't random. They're what a brain reaches for when the demand outruns the tools.

There's a physical reality underneath it, and the simplest way I know to describe it is two pedals.

The gas pedal is the fight-or-flight side of the nervous system. Alert, revved, ready to meet a challenge. You want that pedal. It was never the villain. The brake pedal is the other side: settle, recover, digest, sleep, think clearly. Health isn't living on the brake. Health is being able to move between the two.

What we often see in a struggling child is a system with the gas stuck down and a brake that isn't working yet. In that state, the calm, thinking, top-of-the-brain part drops offline and the more primitive, reactive part takes the wheel. Everything gets more urgent and less flexible.

Which is why "just calm down" and "you know better" don't land. You're talking to the thinking brain, and in that moment the thinking brain isn't driving. You can't lecture a child out of survival mode any more than you can lecture them out of a fever.

Now here's the part I most want you to keep. The brake isn't broken. It's still developing, and it comes online with time and the right input. We're not forcing calm onto your child. We're working on the thing that lets them find it themselves.

So the meltdown is information, not only a problem to stop. It's telling you exactly where a demand outran a tool. That happens to be exactly what we want to know, because it's the part we can actually measure and work on.
