If you've poured real effort into a reading program or a focus strategy and watched it stall, I want to give you the reason, because it's structural. Once you see it, you can stop blaming yourself or your child.
The brain builds from the bottom up, in order. Picture a ladder. The bottom rungs are the early, foundational pieces: reflexes and basic movement. Then movement and touch, big muscles before small ones. Then listening and language. Then the fine control of the eyes. And near the top, the ability to hold a picture in your mind and think with it, which is what reading and focus and problem-solving actually require.
Every rung is the foundation for the one above it. Which leads to the whole point: if a lower rung is unsteady, every rung above it wobbles, no matter how hard you work the top one directly.
So when a child is drilled on reading, or focus, or handwriting, and it isn't holding, my first thought isn't that it's a reading problem or a focus problem. What we usually find is a foundation that isn't steady enough yet to hold that skill. As one of my teachers puts it: if a kid isn't running well, you don't make them run more. You go back to the more basic patterns of movement, get those solid, and then, suddenly, they can run.
That's the work. Instead of drilling the skill that's failing, we find where your child actually is on the ladder, strengthen the rung that isn't steady yet, and let the higher skills come in on a foundation that can finally hold them.
None of that is a knock on the upper-rung tools. Speech therapy, occupational therapy, reading support, they matter, and for a lot of children they're essential. They just can't fully do their job while the rung underneath them is still moving.
Notice the language I used a moment ago, because we use it on purpose: not steady yet. Not behind. Not deficient. Not broken. Not there yet.
Those three words carry a lot. "Behind" is a verdict. "Not there yet" is a location on a path, and a path is something you can move along.
Your child isn't failing the ladder. They're on it. The only question worth answering is which rung, and that's something we can go measure.
